Why is the Siddhayatan Community Center needed?

If you ask any Houstonian what they love about Houston, they’ll give you a lively laundry list of reasons that make Houston a great place to live and raise a family. If you ask Houstonians what changes they would like to see within their community, their responses would be equally passionate. Putting food on the table, stray dogs roaming the neighborhood, and economic hardship are real issues that Houstonians face every day. Houston is a vibrant community, but it’s not without its challenges. The Siddhayatan Community Center aims to address the most pressing issues that affect Houston’s disadvantaged communities.

animal welfare

Houston’s largest shelter, BARC, has estimated that more than a million stray animals are roaming the city. Year-over-year the city has struggled to keep up with the rising number of homeless animals.

Houston’s stray animal crisis can only be addressed through a multi-prong approach that addresses the root causes of animal homelessness and the prohibiting economic and cultural factors that prevent families from spaying and neutering their dogs and cats.

HEALTH

According to recent studies, More Houstonians have become sedentary, food insecure, obese, and diabetic in recent years, with people of color and low-income households disproportionately burdened.

The COVID-19 pandemic only exacerbated these issues. One in four adults in the three-county area does not exercise, and the prevalence of obesity and diabetes has risen, particularly among people of color.

WELLNESS

The harsh reality is that wellness programs are usually reserved for those who can afford them. No more. We aim to shift the paradigm by making wellness accessible and attainable for everyone. This looks like free yoga and meditation classes and holistic health programs that ignite emotional healing and reduce stress and anxiety.

spirituality

Spirituality is the heart behind Siddhayatan Community Center and makes us unique from other non-profit organizations. We understand that our clients come from diverse cultural and religious backgrounds, so we create a welcoming and inclusive space where every life is valued and respected.

SOCIOECONOMIC

Economic disparity is a complex problem that requires complex solutions. Recent statistics show that 19.5% of Houston’s population lives under the poverty line, and the poverty rate in Houston, Texas, is 52.34% higher than the US average.
